Iannis Xenakis Book Series

Sharon Kanach, founder and president of XPA, is editing a Iannis Xenakis book series for Pendragon Press. XPA has co-sponsored two of the books in the series:

Xenakis Matters, edited by Sharon Kanach, contains 30 essays by Xenakis scholars from many different fields, including art history, musicology, philosophy, and architecture. The volume stems from the public programming that accompanied the Iannis Xenakis: Composer, Architect, Visionary exhibition that toured North America in 2010 and 2011.

The Instrumental Music of Iannis Xenakis: Theory, Practice, Self-Borrowing, by Benoît Gibson, presents the mathematical models that Xenakis used in his musical compositions from an analytical perspective. Gibson explains Xenakis’s compositional procedures through detailed analyses and musical examples. Gibson also reveals, for the first time, the extent to which Xenakis borrowed from his own earlier musical works.
