Paquito D’Rivera’s work for the 2009 Composer’s Commission, Ladies in White (las Damas de Blanco) is a reference to the wives of the victims of the “Black Spring of 2003” in Cuba.  During that period, many independent journalists were arrested and accused of being agents of the United States.  The wives protested these arrests and staged strikes in the streets by wearing white dresses.
