De Profundis: The Exiles of Oscar Wilde 18 March 2010, 8:00 pm (pre-concert lecture at 7:00) A theatrical concert presented by the Ensemble for the Romantic Century. The brilliance of his artistic genius did not save Wilde from the wrath of English society when he was arrested, tried, and imprisoned for his homosexuality. The concert focuses on Oscar Wilde’s trials and imprisonment, his heartrending accounts of life in Reading Gaol, and his exquisite poetic and prose writings. Wilde’s writings are interwoven with chamber music by Chausson, Satie, Franck, Elgar, and Vaughan Williams, including Chausson’s magnificent Concerto for violin, piano, and string quartet.
