27-28 February 2014: Aiming at exploring the music, arts, and literature of medieval Iberian Peninsula, “Sounding Communities” will be held at the CUNY Graduate Center on February 27 and at Columbia University the following day. This event is co-sponsored by the Foundation for Iberian music, and one of its ensembles in residence, the New York Andalus Ensemble, will perform at the event. This conference will be part of the Encuentros/Encounters series, an annual conference on Iberian and Latin American music that is also being held at UC Riverside earlier that month.

This year’s conference is dedicated to the memory of María Rosa Menocal, the renowned Yale Hispanist who passed away late last year. Among her many accomplishments, Menocal is known for her book The Ornament of the World: How Muslims, Jews, and Christians Created a Culture of Tolerance in Medieval Spain.
