Archives at the Brook Center

The archives of the Barry S. Brook Center for Music Research and Documentation preserve a rich body of materials documenting the study of music across disciplines, geographies, and time. Housed at the CUNY Graduate Center, these collections reflect the Center’s longstanding commitment to research, collaboration, and the global exchange of knowledge.

Our holdings bring together the papers, research files, sound and visual sources of foundational scholars and projects in musicology and music iconography, including the work of Barry S. Brook, Emanuel Winternitz, and Gustave Reese. They encompass specialized archives such as the Research Center for Music Iconography, the Center for the Study of Free-Reed Instruments, and major thematic collections spanning 18th-century symphonies, French opera, and urban musical life.

Through ongoing digitization and preservation initiatives, the Brook Center works to expand access to its collections and to support new research that bridges music, sound, art, history, and culture. Related public-facing initiatives highlight these archives as being more than repositories of the past–but as active resources for present and future scholarship.

We invite scholars, students, and curious visitors to explore the materials that continue to shape how music is studied, seen, and understood.
