Le Poussin Rouge: Spanish Piano 13 March, 2013: The Foundation for Iberian Music proudly sponsors a concert of Spanish piano music with pianist Adam Kent at Le Poussin Rouge on March 13 at 7:30pm. The concert will include the recent Foundation for Iberian Music Composer’s Commission “Homenatge” (2011) by Tania León and “Sí, a Montsalvatge” by Benet Casablancas, a composer whose “Dance, Song and Celebration: Homage to Xavier Montsalvatge” was the 2012 Composer’s Commission. Pre-concert Lecture at the Church of St. Ignatius of Antioch March 9, 2013: Antoni Pizà is giving a pre-concert lecture at the St. Ignatius of Antioch Episcopal Church on March 9, 2013 at 7pm, followed by the concert at 8pm. The concert is “The Flower of Spain: the Music of Francisco Guerrero” performed by Polyhymnia. Led by Artistic Director John Bradley, Polyhymnia is a small ensemble of instrumentalists and vocalists focusing on historically informed performance of sacred music from the courts and cathedrals of the Renaissance world. They will perform Guerrero’s Missa Surge propera, a mass composed in six voices, hoping to reimagine how this mass might have been heard in Seville’s cathedral during the Spanish Renaissance. Xenakis Matters Book Launch Party: Feb 28, 6:30 PM From the Drawing Center event page: Join us for a launch party celebrating the release of Xenakis Matters: Contexts, Processes, Applications, an anthology of responses by thirty scholars, artists, musicians, architects, musicologists, philosophers, and art historians to the work of experimental composer and architect Iannis Xenakis. Edited by Sharon Kanach and published by Pendragon Press, the book compiles documentation of the ambitious public programming around the Iannis Xenakis: Composer, Architect, Visionary exhibition’s tour in North America in 2010-11, which began at The Drawing Center. The event will include guest speakers from among the contributors to Xenakis Matters: Joel Chadabe, Sharon Kanach, David Lieberman, Carey Lovelace, Robert Rowe, and Ronald Squibbs, as well as a performance by Robert Black, double bass. Charles Rosen, 1927-2012 The Brook Center mourns the passing of Charles Rosen, celebrated pianist and writer upon whom President Barack Obama conferred the National Humanities Medal in early 2012. Rosen was the author of the acclaimed The Classical Style, a frequent contributor to The New York Review of Books, and a passionate advocate of new music. Rosen inaugurated the Brook Center’s new Music in 21st-Century Society lecture series, delivering an inspired talk as well as captivating piano playing, on 18 April 2012, perhaps his last public lecture and performance.
